At the foot of the mighty Setnesfjellet (1,232 meters above sea level) lies the Setnes farm, offering a magnificent view of the Romsdal Fjord. Surrounded by some of Norway’s most stunning peaks and mountains, our family has run the farm here for nearly 300 years. For generations, life was centered around livestock and agriculture. In the summer, the animals were herded to mountain pastures in the valley below Trollstigen, while the people worked hard to ensure good harvests of grain and vegetables.
During World War II, dramatic changes occurred on the farm. Allied forces landed on April 18, 1940, and established a base at Setnesmoen, right behind the farm. On April 30, they warned that the occupying forces would bomb both Setnesmoen and the farm within an hour. A few belongings were saved, and the livestock was set free, but the Swiss-style wooden villa was lost.
After the war, the current main house on the farm was built. The business was named Setnes Farm and Guesthouse. The second floor had rooms for rent and overnight stays, while all meals for the guests were prepared in the large kitchen on the first floor. Word spread about the delicious food at Setnes Farm, and satisfied guests kept coming back—year after year.
The farm and tourism business is now run by the fourth generation. Kristina and Sondre took over the farm from Kristina’s mother in 2020. It is very much a family business, where traditions and style are passed down to the next generation. We have a strong connection to and love for this place and its history—something we strive to share through our cabins.
